The 2019 Physical & Health Education Canada (PHE Canada) national conference will be taking place in my hometown: Montreal, Quebec! The conference will be happening May 2nd to 4th 2019 at McGill University.
Having attended my fair share of physical education conferences in the past, I can tell you that my memories from national conferences truly stand out as some of my favourites. Be it learning about physical literacy for the first time in Toronto, meeting some of the most inspiring Canadian physical education leaders in Halifax, or getting thrown off a mechanical bull in Winnipeg: the quality of experiences you get out of a national conference is second to none.
Ok, so here’s the thing: although I might be slightly biased in this regard, the 2019 PHE Canada national conference in Montreal is going to be the best one ever. As a member of the Association of Physical Educators of Quebec’s (APEQ) executive team, I promise you that we are going all out in regards to planning a conference that you will never forget.
So, if you’re looking for reasons as to why this event will be a must for every physical and health educators professional development bucket list, here’s my list:
Develop Your Teaching Toolkit
Obviously one of the best reasons to attend a national conference is because you’re guaranteed to come out of it with tons of new ideas/strategies for your teaching! For the 2019 national conference in Montreal, the organizing committee will be selecting some of the best presenters our profession has to offer. You can expect amazing sessions in the following categories:
- Physical Education & Physical Literacy
- Health Education
- Assessment & Evaluation
- Educational Technology
- Outdoor Education
- Health-Promoting Schools
- Wellness Programs
- Inclusive Environments
- Injury Prevention
Broaden Your Professional Network
With teachers from across the country (and the world) in attendance, you are sure to make professional connections that will broaden your network. A rich, vibrant professional network is key when it comes to accelerating your professional growth and powering through the most challenging moments in your career.
Pro tip: attend as many social events and spend some time at the hotel watering hole. Some of the best professional conversations I’ve every had happened casually over a couple of refreshments!
Add To Your Advocacy Arsenal
If you are one of the many teachers who are fighting for their program, then attending a national conference is sure to give you resources and ideas that will help you become a stronger advocate for quality physical education.
With Canada’s top physical and health education champions in attendance, you are sure to come away with best practices, research, and additional advocacy ideas that will help your school community truly value the work that you do!
Rekindle Your Passion For Teaching
Teaching can be an emotional journey, fulls of highs and lows. If you are feeling like you are in a rut in your teaching, if you’ve lost that sense of passion that you once had, then attending a national conference is one of the most effective ways to get that fire in your belly burning hot once again!
If you’ve never attended a national conference before, I can tell you that the passion in the air is incredible. With such a diverse variety of educators and advocates in attendance, it is hard to not come away feeling fired up about the work that you do.
No matter the challenges you face, you are sure to meet people who have met similar challenges and overcame them. There is incredible power in surrounding yourself with people who are so crazy about physical and health education (including this guy!)
Experience One Of The Best Cities In The World
Montreal is one helluva city. Having grown up here, I may be a little biased in my opinion. That said, there is a reason why so many people come to Montreal to experience its culture, attractions, entertainment, and nightlife.
I can’t wait to be an ambassador for my hometown and hope to show you all of the amazing things that Montreal has to offer. Get ready to eat, dance, and be active!
Hopefully, this blog post has helped get you fired up for #PHEMontreal2019! Again, I truly believe we are putting together one of the most important physical education events that teachers will ever get to experience and one that will help raise the bar for our profession for years to come!
That being said, I’d love to hear what has you fired up for the 2019 PHE Canada National Conference in Montreal, Quebec? Share your thoughts/excitement on social media using the #PHEMontreal2019 hashtag (which I’ll be following obsessively until the conference is over).
I hope to see you in Montreal!
Thanks for reading and happy teaching!
